Critiques

Here are a few unsolicited emails, letters, and newspaper articles that were sent to me.  Some are from people I have never met.  One is from a distant cousin from Buenos Aires, Argentina who you can see enjoys my book even though it is difficult for him to explain so in English.

Thanks again for sending me It Rains MURDER Sometimes in Juneau. I very much like the overall concept. The story has a lot of shrewd and remarkably apt detail. No easy task – and certainly an important achievement for a novel of this style. Descriptions and accounts of the workings of the powerhouses as well as the Juneau PD are well-crafted and precise. The plot has most of the quintessential elements of a good crime novel: significant development, believable character motivations, and compelling twists. You have a great strength for establishing scene and plot. The characters are rich, lively, and unique.  The dialogue, though sparse, is quick and believable and reads very much like a courtroom interview or interrogation (which is excellent considering the fact that most of the dialogue takes place in those settings)……..William Greenleaf – Port Angeles, WA

Our distant Italian ancestors were saying …Tempus Fugit (fleeting time). Believe or not I’m in the 142 page  (take into account that English it is not my mother tongue) and after the firsts chapters deliciously autobiographical, I am immersed now in the increasing vortex of murders that Rex commits. Every day when I go in the subway or in taxi to my work, I read some pages and look in the dictionary for many words that I do not remember. And every time I astonish with the detailed descriptions that there does Santori (Roy) of the eventful circumstances of these murders in the country of the cold and the rain. How you could have caught the essences of the criminal thought?. Surely your experiences like policeman will have helped you. Let me to take a few days more and finish the novel and I will do to you a better summary of my impressions…………….  Eduardo Varni – Buenos Aires, Argentina

This is an excellent novel. What easy music listening is to music lovers is what this work of fiction is to avid readers. The author has a good command of the English syntax in that his words and ideas flow smoothly and coherently in taking the reader into a journey of mystery and suspense. It is a delightful and clever thriller, well laid out and to the point. This book is recommended for travelers and for people who read simply for the joy of reading and relaxing. Excellent! Highly recommended…… Sammy Munoz and Phyllis Bartel – Glendale, AZ

I just finished your wonderful book.  Your mind is so fun.  I marvel at how you thought up all the twists and turns in the book.  Let me know when your next one comes out.  Give my best to Mrs. Wonderful………Karen Shoupe – Ashburn, VA

I read it in record time, and really hated to put it down.  I did not find a single typo or grammatical error in the book which these days seems to be a rarity.  I also enjoyed the short chapters and the overall length of the story.  I hope you write another and another, and another.  I’ll read them all……Michael L. Buich, Owner Tadich Grill – San Francisco, CA

Recommended by a friend. I had a stack of books I wanted to read but thought I would order for later. IT RAINS MURDER SOMETIMES IN JUNEAU arrived and I thought I would read a page or two to decide if I would put the book on the bottom of my stack of books to read. Of course I could not put it down. Well written, fast paced and different. Interesting characters and the descriptions of Juneau very accurate. I really hope Roy Varni writes more books because I want to read more of his works. Thank you Roy Varni. Bravo!…..Beverly Bartolini – San Carlos, CA

I love murder mysteries for recreational reading, and I quickly became engrossed with this one. Here is a fictional novel set in the environs of a tourist locale well known to hosts of travelers the world over. The book quickly draws in the reader’s involvement at almost every turn and twist of the story. Mr. Varni has taken care to craft ‘real life’ characters whose interactions with each other in the relatively small confines of our most northern state capital commanded and held my interest right up to the very conclusion of the book, and left me wanting more. I hope we will soon see more from this author….. Ernest Tufft – Vacaville, CA
